Celadons

After several very bad accidents, I’m thrilled that most of my works survived the firing and made it to the senior show.  I have a very personal connection to celadon. It was my very first impression of ceramics. In middle school, I learned about the history of celadon in a history class, long before I knew anything about ceramic art itself. Yet even then, I was deeply moved by the poetic phrase, “the color of the sky after rain breaks through the clouds.”
The beauty of celadon comes from an ultimate sense of elegance. This elegance is not limited to the color of the glaze; it is the result of the vessel’s entire presence — its form, proportion, and even its weight. A heavy celadon cup could never feel truly elegant. Because of this, I strive to pursue the highest level of craftsmanship possible in order to express my understanding of the beauty embodied by celadon.

I make my pieces as thin as possible, allowing light to pass through them with ease. It is a beauty that is deeply restrained and understated, yet possesses a quiet and undeniable presence.
